My Favorite Things

Because we have a DVR, I never miss an episode of Oprah. Just recently she had her "Favorite Things" show. You know, the one where seemingly normal women become complete lunatics as Oprah merely breathes the words "favorite things." Then, these ladies get thousands of dollars worth of loot that Oprah thinks everyone has to have this season. You know, such things as cashmere lamp shades and saphire cheese graters. Just the basics.

So, in a special twist, this year, Oprah decided to do a "Favorite Things" show about things that don't cost a lot of money, and truly come from the heart. Because, afterall, that is what the Holidays are all about. Don't get me wrong, I think it is a good sentiment. But, I couldn't help but wonder what the people in the audience were thinking.

They probably went into the show thinking they hit the motherload, and then, Oprah had to say the words "economical" and "from the heart" and instantly their hearts sank. I listened closely to the studio audience and there were no hysterics and cheers. If you listened very closely you could hear the sound of someone weeping in the back. They got nothing free. Nothing. Call me a cynic, but I bet those people were really pissed off. And, I bet you a thousand cashmere lamp shades that Oprah won't be able to contain herself and in a few months she will be up to her regular old hijinks of giving away tons of crap.

Anyways, I was thinking about what some of my favorite things are. Since I don't really have a lot of "things" like Oprah does, I had to be very creative. The list may be very short, I am just doing this as I go.

#1- Mad Men. This is a TV show and I think it is the greatest thing since Alias Season Two. I just rented the entire first season on DVD, and I believe that they will start the third season sometime on AMC. I totally recommend this show.

#2- DVR and HD- So, because I love me some TV, these two things have taken my television viewing to the next level. I can't imagine ever going without these things again. I can invision myself rationalizing the need of having water or cable.

#3- My puffy maternity winter jacket- I love this thing. I don't care if I look like an idiot in it. It keeps me warm and I can zip it up all the way.

#4- Fruit snacks - Abe is obsessed with fruit snacks. It has become quite the bargaining tool. It works every time.

So, um yeah, I only have four favorite things. That is very economical, so Oprah can suck it.
