be bottom of funnel DMB content.
To explain what that means in relation to DMB content, below are examples of what each type of content would be;
Top of Funnel: Who is Dave Matthews Band?
Middle of Funnel: Here are 3 of Dave Matthews Band’s most popular songs
Bottom of Funnel: Bri’s DMB N1 Setlist Recap
It’s getting deep and into the weeds. And, it may self-destruct in 48 hours.
Some things to note before we dive into the concert:
Friday, the vibes were immaculate. The weather, the breeze. Everyone was so happy to be there. The lady who sold me my $32 beer said she loved my dress. We arrived to our beloved spot and just took it all in.
An observation though is that this crowd is old. And, it was punctuated by the fact that we saw a middle aged woman, sitting in her lawn chair rental (which we all know now is a baller move of course) puking into a ziplock bag. I couldn’t turn away. She puked so much. Multiple times. This is the downfall of being middle aged here. We think we can still party like we are in our 20s. We WANT to party like we are in our 20s. but, we can’t. I hope she’s doing okay.
Ward and I head down to our seats, and when we find them we look at each other in DMB-nerd disbelief. It happens every year – we can’t believe how close we are. I never want that to get old. I of course think I am going to make eye contact with Dave Matthews, and then we will see what happens from there. Amirite?
We are surrounded by men in their 50s or older. The guy sitting next to me introduced himself and his brother who looked to be 80 (Ward didn’t think he was that old, but trust me). But they seemed cool enough. It was Jeff’s (80 year old) 94th show! Go Jeff!
So, onto the music:
GREY STREET
Banger. Obvi. This was a surprising opener because usually this is a mid-set or even encore. I was there for it. The energy was instantly electric and we had just gotten started. 10/10
#41
Does anyone NOT want to hear this song? The answer is no. Everyone loves it. Banger. 10/10
THE IDEA OF YOU
Surprising! Love this song. Ward agreed. At this point, the guy next to me (Jeff’s brother) was talking to me a lot, and then he asked if my husband was getting upset. A little creeps, but also, maybe not creeps?
DO YOU REMEMBER
This song was on my wish list. I love it. It is a great summer song. I posted a bad video on my Instagram, but it had to be done. “It was the summer of loovvveeee!” Chef’s kiss. 11/10
A random note: At some point around here the guy next to me, Jeff’s brother, offers to buy me a drink. I obviously say yes because: a) Free drink b) I don’t have to leave my seat! As soon as I said yes I could tell that Ward instantly thought this was a bad idea, and then I already knew that he thought this guy was going to roofie me. Which, honestly, what a compliment. If Jeff’s brother, and Jeff who is 80 by the way, really want to roofie a 45 year old strongly built woman in the middle of a crowd at DMB show, I say GOOD LUCK TO YOU SIRS. I was imagining them dragging me out and then up the hilly paved concourse past all of the merch stands. Spoiler alert: I did not get roofied.
PNP→ SEEK UP
MIND BLOWN. I died. Dead. Then the ghost of me floated out of my body and watched me. This is when things shifted for me and I got emotional. So happy to hear Seek Up, it’s been awhile. I told Ward when you’re 25 Seek Up is a pee song, when you are 45 it is my thesis. 20/10
WAREHOUSE
This is one of my top 3 favorite songs, and honestly if they just played Warehouse 21 times at a concert I would be okay with it. At this point, I was getting nervous that there would be no pee songs. 15/10
MADMEN’S EYES
I have nothing against this song, but this was my window to pee and I took. Sometimes you have to make a strategic decision and take a risk. In this case that risk was missing …
YOU NEVER KNOW
Ughhh, that one hurt. We did get to hear it a bit on the sidelines, but this was also on my wishlist. Bummer. But we made it back in time for the next song.
DANCING NANCIES
I do love this song. The “Look up at the sky” moment is always a great moment of the night. At this point the crowd was insane. 10/10
BLACK AND BLUE BIRD
Very sweet song. 9/10
RAPUNZEL
Again, a song that is usually a closer or even an encore and it’s like 3/4ths down the setlist. Wild. We were off the rails in a very good way. 11/10
LYING IN THE HANDS OF GOOD→ AMERICAN BABY INTRO
I was feeeeeeeeling this. And, I feel like I manifested this. I have been very into this song lately, and not sure why. Starting to get emotional at this point. Also, still not roofied. I think Ward is finally believing that I will not be. 13/10
BREAK FREE
Hot take, but meh. Only because every other song has been insane. 6/10
SLEDGEHAMMER
Normally this song is just okay, but you can tell that Dave really loves it so much, and for that I love it too. Bonus for his iconic dance moves. 10/10
SAY GOODBYE
I cried. I have been chasing this song for YEARS. YEARS I tell you. It’s ALWAYS on my wish list. When Jeff (not the old man sitting next to us – Jeff Coffin) brought out the flute I knew it was game over. Will remember this song forever and always. 20/10
YOU AND ME
4/10 - I said what I said.
ANTS MARCHING
Always a banger. Even though I’ve heard this a billion times it’s always fun. They play this every year at Deer Creek, so it’s just like a check the box situation. 9/10
BABY BLUE
I may be making this up, but this night was the anniversary of LeRoi’s last show. This is definitely a LeRoi song. I think Dave got a little choked up at the beginning and had to restart. It was sweet. With that said, I thought for sure we would get Why I am. 9/10
YOU MIGHT DIE TRYING
I really do like this song, and honestly, this is a better encore choice than some that they have been playing this year (If it was Stay, I was going to leave early.) Really hoping for The Last Stop, but that may come tonight. Stay tuned. 9/10
And that concludes my first DMB show recap. I probably could have taken better mental notes (oh, wow, did you see what I did there!? MENTAL NOTES) but I was busy alternating between dancing my ass off and crying. Maybe after tonight I will have something poetic to say about what this weekend always means to me, but I will say that all day and night I had an overwhelming feeling of gratitude to be able to do this every year, with some of my best friends.
I hope the lady that puked in the ziplock bag is okay.
PEACE OUT
