w00t the heck!

Okay, I know this if very uncharacterstic of me to write a blog that does not involve my son or my twitch in some way, but I felt it was my duty as a marketing professtional and, if I daresay a writer, to speak out on what is happening to the writing of the world today.

The word "w00t" was added to the dictionary.

w00t (interjection):
expressing joy (it could be after a triumph, or for no reason at all); similar in use to the word “yay”

w00t! I won the contest!

This year’s winning word first became popular in competitive online gaming forums as part of what is known as l33t (”leet,” or “elite”) speak—an esoteric computer hacker language in which numbers and symbols are put together to look like letters. Although the double “o” in the word is usually represented by double zeroes, the exclamation is also known to be an acronym for “we owned the other team”—again stemming from the gaming community.

Does anyone else have a problem with this? As a writer in the corporate world I battle every day to find and destroy those words that are created by corporations -- impactful, incentivize -- let alone correct those that are used incorrectly -- its/it's, more than instead of over, etc. And, the freaking dictionary is now accepting words that are not only made up, but have numerals in them.

I fear for the day when The New York Times will be printing stories with headlines such as: "President LOLs at new healthcare reform bill."

That day is acomin. And, it's acomin fast.
