There has been much speculation over how our precious, fluffy dog dog would react to our precious, gooey baby. To us, he is all about spreading the love. To others (and especially neighborhood children, with a total hatred for those dressed up as Power Rangers) he is a ferocious, yet overweight fluffy dog.
For the most part, Jake and I have been in denial of what will happen when our baby enters our doggie's world. We keep assuring ourselves that he will be fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine. And, he will loooooooooooove the baby. I have been trying very hard to talk to Ozzie and tell him that "the baby is in my belly and it is his new brother." Ozzie just looks at me funny. I also think he is getting tired of me asking him to kiss my belly. I think he thinks I am just crazy.
However, I think that we have definitely underestimated our dog. He has been paying attention after all.
This weekend we got a(nother!!) package from my Grandma. As I was tearing through the box and styrafoam, little Ozzie was sitting right next to me in anticipation of what toys he would be getting. Although by now, he should know that all of the things coming into our house are for Baby, not him. However, this time he was delighted to find four stuffed animals, all soft and cuddly and ready for him to tear into. (Please see photo below)
All of these little stuffed friends seemed to look at us and say, "We're SUUUUUUUUPER!! Thanks for asking!!" With their little bow ties and perfectly quaffed hair. Ozzie seemed engaged, and sniffed and sniffed and wagged his tail. "No, Ozzie," I said, "These are for the Baaaaaaaaaabbbbbbbbby." And, like magic he backed away and looked at me as if he understood. I pointed over to his toy box. "See, those are your toys." (See photo below)
Ozzie's tried and true friends -- little Bear, Tweety, Miss Cherrry and Eddie the Duck looked back at him. (Some of them with only one eye.) I am sure that the plush, well stuffed, anatomically correct NEW animals looked much better to Ozzie, but like I told him, they were for the baby.
So, on with the rest of the day I went. About an hour or so later, I came back down to get the stuffed animals for the Baby's room. I was in a dreamy, wonderment of babyness as I was gazing at each little animal, when lo and behold, I spotted a little something odd about the bear. He was missing something. Hmmmmmm. What could it be?? (see photo below)

Well, by golly, he was missing his nose! I looked around to find Ozzie, but he was no where in sight. Someone had daintily nibbled off his nose, with nothing but a wee bit of slobber left as evidence. I know that slobber anywhere, I didn't need a Doggie DNA test.
I was impressed at his control to only take a nose off of the bear. He could have destroyed all of the animals in less than an hour's time. However, I was very perplexed at this new development, and it made me realize that I do indeed think he knows about the baby. Ozzie is sending a message. That is how Ozzie rolls.

This is me at 32 weeks. My stomach is GINORMOUS. I provide shade and shelter from sun and storms.

Ozzie is a gentle giant and I know he will be so protective of the baby! Little Miss Molly is the one who is crazy when it comes to kids. She can't handle being around anything cuter than she is, and is going to need intense therapy when we have a child!
Can you say, He, he, he, hooo? You are just about there girl. My goodness the old wives tale about out like a bullet, means a boy is so true.
I think that bear is adorable sans nose. I think Ozzie was just trying to show you his sense of humor. Haha. Have you read Marley & Me? I just finished it not too long ago and it is a great book for dog lovers. It written by a guy who tells stories about integrating his dog into his family life. Dog came first, then babies. You and Ozzie should cuddle up and read it together. :)
